About Copán
Copán Ruinas is a small colonial-style town in western Honduras, best known as the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Maya site of Copán. Set among green hills near the Guatemalan border, it combines cobblestone streets, relaxed cafés and a strong archaeological identity.
The nearby ruins preserve one of the most important cities of the ancient Maya world. Visitors come to see the Great Plaza and its carved stelae, the ball court, the Acropolis and the Hieroglyphic Stairway, one of the longest known Maya inscriptions. The on-site Sculpture Museum displays the life-size replica of the Rosalila Temple.
In town, daily life centres on the small central park, surrounded by restaurants, hotels, shops and tour operators. Beyond the ruins, travellers explore Macaw Mountain Bird Park, local hot springs, coffee farms and nearby Chortí communities.
Copán Ruinas is primarily a cultural and nature destination, though it also supports tourism-related business and small events. Its relaxed pace, heritage and easy access to outdoor experiences make it appealing for both leisure travellers and small groups or study tours.
