About Atlántida
La Ceiba is the capital of Honduras's Atlántida department and a lively port city on the country's northern Caribbean coast. Known as the tourism capital of Honduras and nicknamed La Novia de Honduras, it combines beaches, nearby rainforest and mountain landscapes with an energetic urban atmosphere.
Founded in 1877, La Ceiba grew during the banana boom of the early 20th century and remains one of the country's most important ports after Puerto Cortés. Its coastal setting is framed by the Nombre de Dios mountain range, with Pico Bonito National Park rising to 2,435 metres behind the city and the Cangrejal River offering Class III–IV whitewater rafting.
Visitors often explore the Cangrejal River valley, Pico Bonito National Park and the Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, while the city's ferry terminal provides daily links to the Bay Islands of Roatán and Utila. The Barrio La Isla area comes alive during the Gran Carnaval Internacional de La Ceiba, a week-long celebration in May honouring the city's patron saint, San Isidro.
La Ceiba's economy blends commerce, agriculture and tourism, with pineapple production and Standard Fruit Company operations anchored in the city. Its seafront, bars, seafood restaurants and event calendar make it a regional hub for leisure, while the port and airport connect travellers to the Bay Islands and the Mosquitia region.
Whether visitors come for diving and island ferries, rainforest adventures or the city's carnival and nightlife, La Ceiba serves as a practical and distinctive gateway to Honduras's Caribbean coast for both leisure and business travellers.

Atlántida Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
February to April bring some of the driest and sunniest conditions, making them ideal for beaches, rafting and national park visits. May is also lively thanks to the Gran Carnaval Internacional de La Ceiba, while the wettest months between October and December call for a rain plan.
How to Get Around
Taxis and local buses serve central La Ceiba, and many downtown areas are walkable. For the Cangrejal River valley, Pico Bonito trails and the coast, visitors typically use taxis, private drivers or rental vehicles, while ferries depart from the port for Roatán and Utila.
Where to Stay
Central La Ceiba and the malecón area offer easy access to restaurants, bars and the ferry terminal. The Cangrejal River valley is popular for jungle lodges and rafting stays, while beach areas near Sambo Creek provide a quieter coastal base.
