About Nord-Ouest

Port-de-Paix is the capital of Haiti's Nord-Ouest department and a historic port town on the country's northern Atlantic coast. It is best known as the mainland gateway to Île de la Tortue, the island once associated with 17th-century pirates, and as a quiet regional trading centre with a working harbour and relaxed coastal character.

Founded during the French colonial period, Port-de-Paix was among the first French footholds in western Hispaniola. Its past is visible in colonial-era streets, the waterfront and nearby forts such as Fort des Trois Pavillons; a fire in 1903 destroyed much of the older town, but the port remained an export point for bananas and coffee.

The compact centre clusters around the harbour and market, where fishing boats, traders and seafood stalls set the daily rhythm. Day trips by boat go to Île de la Tortue for beaches and fishing villages, while the region around Port-de-Paix offers caves and coastal scenery for travellers who prefer a slower, less developed route.

Food and social life centre on fresh seafood such as grilled snapper, lobster and accra, served with pikliz and fried plantains. Accommodation is mostly simple guesthouses and small hotels near the port, and the town has a modest local nightlife of waterfront eateries and neighbourhood bars.

Port-de-Paix remains a small commercial and administrative hub rather than a major tourist resort, which makes it relevant for travellers seeking an authentic, low-key base for exploring Haiti's northwest. Business visitors are limited, but the town's port, airport and road links support regional trade and connections to Cap-Haïtien and Port-au-Prince.
