About St Sampson
St Sampson is a historic parish and Guernsey's second port, stretching along the island's north-east coast directly north of St Peter Port. Its waterfront is defined by a working harbour, marinas, boatyards and commercial quays that give the area a distinctly maritime character.
The parish has deep roots: St Sampson's Parish Church is one of Guernsey's oldest churches, with origins in the 12th century, and the harbour entrance is overlooked by fortifications such as Vale Castle and the Napoleonic-era Mont Crevelt tower. Until the early 1800s the area was partly separated from the rest of Guernsey by the tidal channel of the Braye du Valle, which was later drained and reclaimed.
Around the harbour and at The Bridge, which St Sampson shares with the neighbouring parish of Vale, visitors find marinas, boatyards, waterside walks and a quieter, more local side of the island. Coastal paths and cycle routes connect the parish with St Peter Port and Guernsey's northern coastline.
St Sampson remains closely linked to Guernsey's marine industries and commerce, while its location makes it a practical base for exploring the island. Guernsey Airport lies roughly seven kilometres away, and the parish's harbourside pubs, cafés and seafood restaurants offer a relaxed contrast to the busier centre of St Peter Port.
