About Retalhuleu
Retalhuleu, often shortened to Reu, is the capital of Guatemala's Retalhuleu Department in the hot Pacific lowlands of the southwest. The city anchors a productive agricultural region and is best known as the gateway to the IRTRA family parks, one of Central America's largest recreation complexes, and to the beaches of nearby Champerico.
The city's name comes from K'iche' words meaning roughly 'sign in the earth.' Retalhuleu developed as a trading and plantation centre after the Pacific port of Champerico opened in 1871, and it became a departmental capital in 1877. Its compact historic core is organised around the central plaza and the church of San Antonio, while the palm-lined Calzada Las Palmas gives the city a relaxed, tropical feel.
Most visitors come for the IRTRA parks in neighbouring San Martín Zapotitlán: Xocomil is a large themed water park, Xetulul is a theme park with reproductions of world landmarks, and Xejuyup adds riverside adventure attractions. Around the department, highlights include the pre-Columbian site of Tak'alik Ab'aj, Dino Park, coffee and banana fincas, and the seafood restaurants and pier at Champerico beach.
Retalhuleu's economy revolves around sugar, coffee, bananas, cattle and commerce, and the city works as a regional service hub for business and government. Local food ranges from market snacks and chicharrones with yuca to fresh Pacific seafood, while hot weather, family attractions and easy access to the coast make it a practical stop for both leisure and business travellers exploring southwestern Guatemala.
