About Nyanga

Tchibanga is the capital of Gabon's southernmost Nyanga Province, a compact administrative and trading town set on the north bank of the Nyanga River. It serves as the main gateway to the forests, lagoons and protected areas of southwestern Gabon, while keeping a calm, provincial rhythm shaped by market days and river traffic.

The town grew around a crossroads linking Mouila, Ndendé and the coastal town of Mayumba. Its landmarks are modest but locally important: a large Catholic church, a hospital, secondary schools, a post office and a busy central market where produce, fish and crafts change hands. The Nyanga River remains the visual heart of the town, with pirogues and fishing activity along its banks.

Most visitors use Tchibanga as a base for excursions rather than a museum destination. Moukalaba-Doudou National Park, reached from the town, is known for elephants, gorillas and rainforest scenery, while Mayumba National Park and the Banio Lagoon offer beaches, mangroves and seasonal leatherback turtle nesting. The small market and riverfront are the easiest ways to experience local life.

The town's economy centres on regional trade and agriculture. Rice cultivation, introduced in the 1940s, is concentrated around Tchibanga, alongside cassava, peanuts and palm oil, and the surrounding area has long-standing lumber and marble activity. Tchibanga Airport links the town by air with Port-Gentil and other Gabonese cities.

For business travellers, Tchibanga is a hub for administration, agriculture and logistics in southern Gabon; for leisure travellers, it is the practical starting point for national parks and the Atlantic coast. Its small scale makes it manageable, while its surroundings reward travellers prepared for slower roads and remote landscapes.

Nyanga Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The drier months from June to September are the most practical for reaching parks and travelling the region's roads, while a shorter dry period often falls between December and February. November to March is the leatherback turtle nesting season at Mayumba, a rewarding time for coastal visits despite more rain.

How to Get Around

Tchibanga is small enough to explore on foot, with shared taxis available for local trips. The N6 road connects the town to Ndendé, Mayumba and other regional centres, but journeys to national parks and remote areas are easier in a 4x4, especially during the rainy season.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is limited and mostly consists of small hotels and guesthouses, with options concentrated near the centre and the river. Travellers heading to the coast can also use lodges around Mayumba, while Tchibanga works well as an overnight stop between the interior and the Atlantic.

Food & Drink

Tchibanga's market offers fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and local staples such as cassava, plantains and rice. Small restaurants and street stalls serve grilled fish, peanut-based sauces and Gabonese dishes, giving visitors an authentic taste of the region.
