About Pirkanmaa
Tampere is Finland's third-largest city and the capital of the Pirkanmaa region, built between the lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi where the Tammerkoski rapids cut through the centre. Long known as the 'Manchester of the North' for its industrial heritage, the city has also been called the 'Sauna Capital of the World' and today combines red-brick factory districts with modern development.
The city was founded in 1779 and grew rapidly during the 19th century as a major centre of Finnish industry. Former textile and engineering complexes such as the Finlayson and Tampella areas have been converted into museums, shops, restaurants, offices and cultural venues, while landmarks like Tampere Cathedral, the Näsinneula observation tower and Särkänniemi amusement park define the skyline.
Neighbourhoods such as Pispala, with its wooden houses and steep streets, and the Pyynikki ridge offer distinctive local character, while the Vapriikki museum centre, Moomin Museum, Tampere Art Museum and the lakeside Hatanpää Arboretum add to the city's cultural appeal. The central Keskustori square and riverside paths make the compact centre easy to explore on foot.
Tampere is also an important centre for technology, education and events, anchored by Tampere University and a strong engineering and IT sector. The Nokia Arena hosts major concerts and ice hockey, and annual events such as the Tampere Theatre Festival, Tampere Film Festival and Tammerfest draw visitors throughout the year.
For both leisure and business travellers, Tampere offers a compact, walkable centre, lakeside scenery, a lively food and sauna culture, and convenient connections by train, road and Tampere-Pirkkala Airport.
