About Satakunta
Pori is the regional capital of Satakunta on Finland's west coast, set at the mouth of the Kokemäki River about ten kilometres from the Gulf of Bothnia. Known as the Bear City, it combines maritime heritage, industrial history and a lively summer events calendar.
Founded in 1558 by Duke John, later King John III of Sweden, Pori has repeatedly been rebuilt after fires, giving its centre a calm grid layout and riverside parks. The Neo-Renaissance Juselius Mausoleum, Satakunta Museum and Pori Art Museum are key cultural anchors.
Beyond the centre, Yyteri's long sandy beach and dunes draw summer crowds, while the wooden island village of Reposaari, the Kallo lighthouse and Bothnian Sea National Park offer coastal escapes. Kirjurinluoto park hosts major events, including the internationally known Pori Jazz Festival every July.
Districts range from the compact Keskusta centre to resort-like Yyteri and historic Reposaari, while Noormarkku is home to the Ahlström Ironworks and Alvar Aalto's Villa Mairea. Local food centres on the porilainen sausage sandwich and fresh Bothnian Sea fish.
Pori is also a business and logistics hub, with the Port of Pori, Technip and Satakunta University of Applied Sciences, while ice hockey club Porin Ässät and FC Jazz add local character. For both leisure and business travellers, it is a compact west-coast base near Rauma's Old Town and other Satakunta sights.

Satakunta Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
Summer from June to August is the liveliest season, when the Pori Jazz Festival takes over Kirjurinluoto in July and Yyteri's beach is at its best. Late spring and early autumn offer milder weather and fewer crowds, while winter is quiet and cold.
How to Get Around
Pori's centre is compact and easy to explore on foot or by bicycle. Local buses connect the centre with Yyteri, Reposaari and outlying areas, while taxis, rental cars and private transfers are useful for reaching the coast, Noormarkku and nearby Satakunta towns.
Where to Stay
Stay in the city centre for easy access to restaurants, museums and the Kirjurinluoto event park. Yyteri suits beach holidays and spa stays, while Reposaari and Noormarkku offer quieter seaside and historic rural settings.
Food & Drink
Try porilainen, a local sausage sandwich sold across the city, alongside fresh fish from the Bothnian Sea. The centre's cafés, restaurants and summer market stalls offer Finnish and international food, with seasonal eating around the Pori Jazz festival.
