About Wele-Nzas

Mongomo is a small inland town in eastern Equatorial Guinea and the administrative capital of Wele-Nzas province, close to the border with Gabon. It has grown from a modest border settlement into a place of national symbolism, known above all as the hometown of the country's long-serving president and as the site of one of Africa's largest churches.

The town's defining landmark is the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the largest church in Central Africa and the second-largest Catholic church on the continent. Around it, Plaza de los Presidentes and the Cultural Centre of Mongomo add a political and cultural dimension, while Mongomo Stadium is a focus for local football and public events.

The compact centre is built around the market and administrative buildings, with the basilica visible on the skyline. Beyond the town, Wele-Nzas province offers dense rainforest, the Monte Temelón and Altos de Nsork national parks, and rural Fang communities; the planned new capital, Ciudad de la Paz, is being developed nearby.

Mongomo's position on the Gabonese border gives it a role in regional trade and cross-border movement, and its roads connect the interior with Bata on the coast. For travellers, the town offers a quieter, road-focused experience of mainland Equatorial Guinea, useful as a base for exploring the eastern provinces and reaching the national parks.

Wele-Nzas Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The drier periods from December to February and roughly June to August are generally the most comfortable for exploring Mongomo. Heavy rains from March to May and September to November can make rural roads muddy, while the equatorial climate remains hot and humid throughout the year.

How to Get Around

Mongomo's centre is small enough to explore on foot, and shared taxis, moto-taxis and minibuses are used for short trips around town and to nearby villages. For longer journeys, the main roads connect Mongomo with Bata and other provincial centres.

Where to Stay

Accommodation is limited and concentrated around the town centre and the basilica area, mostly in small hotels and guesthouses. Travellers combining a longer mainland trip often also use the wider range of hotels in Bata.

Food & Drink

Local eating in Mongomo centres on Fang staples such as pepesup fish soup, plantain, cassava and grilled meats, with palm wine known as malamba served locally. Food stalls, small restaurants and the central market are the main places to eat.
