About East Kazakhstan

Oskemen, also known as Ust-Kamenogorsk, is the administrative centre of East Kazakhstan Region and one of the largest cities in eastern Kazakhstan. It lies at the meeting point of the Irtysh and Ulba rivers, framed by the forested foothills of the Altai range, and functions as a gateway to the Altai region.

Founded in 1720 as a Russian frontier fortress, Oskemen grew into a major mining and metallurgy centre during the Soviet period. Industrial landmarks such as the Ulba Metallurgical Plant and Kazzinc operations still shape the local economy, while the Oskemen Lock on the Irtysh demonstrates the city's long connection with river navigation and hydropower.

Central Oskemen is centred on the river embankment, Zhastar Park and the Strelka area, where the Irtysh and Ulba meet. Cultural stops include the East Kazakhstan Regional Museum of History and Local Lore, the East Kazakhstan Regional Architectural and Ethnographic Museum-Reserve, the East Kazakhstan Museum of Arts and the Zhambyl Regional Drama Theatre. Ice hockey is a local passion, and Kazzinc-Torpedo games at the Boris Alexandrov Sports Palace draw enthusiastic crowds.

Outside the immediate centre, the Central Market and a mix of Kazakh, Russian and international cafés and restaurants reflect the city's everyday life. Oskemen is also a practical base for excursions toward the Altai mountains, Katon-Karagay National Park and other natural areas of East Kazakhstan Region.

For travellers, Oskemen combines an industrial-business profile with a relaxed provincial atmosphere and easy access to nature. Business visitors come for mining, metallurgy and regional trade, while leisure travellers use the city as a starting point for Altai landscapes, river scenery and the cultural heritage of eastern Kazakhstan.
