About La Altagracia

Punta Cana is the Dominican Republic's best-known resort destination, set on the eastern coast of La Altagracia province. Its long Caribbean shoreline of white-sand beaches, palm trees and all-inclusive resorts stretches from Uvero Alto in the north through Bávaro and El Cortecito to Cap Cana in the south.

The area was mostly rural until the late 1960s, when Grupo Puntacana began developing the coast and, in 1984, opened Punta Cana International Airport. Since then it has grown into one of the Caribbean's busiest tourism hubs, while Higüey, the provincial capital, remains a centre of Dominican everyday and religious life, anchored by the Basílica Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia.

Beaches such as Bávaro, Macao, Playa Blanca and Juanillo are the main draw, along with day trips to Saona and Catalina islands, the cenote Hoyo Azul in Cap Cana and the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park. Inland, Higüey offers a more local experience with its basilica, busy market streets and traditional Dominican restaurants.

Tourism is the dominant industry, supported by a large workforce in nearby Verón, and the airport links Punta Cana with cities across the Americas and Europe. Golf courses, marinas, conference hotels and large resort venues also make the area relevant for business travel, incentive trips and corporate events.

Whether visiting for beach relaxation, family holidays, golf or business, Punta Cana combines easy access with a wide range of resorts, dining and outdoor experiences across one of the Caribbean's most visited destinations.

La Altagracia Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

December to April is the driest and most popular period, with reliable sunshine and lower humidity. May to November brings more rain, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November; January is also notable for the Higüey feast day celebrations.

How to Get Around

Punta Cana is spread out along the coast, so most visitors use pre-booked airport transfers, taxis, resort shuttles or rental cars. Public guaguas run along the main roads but are less practical for resort-hopping, while private drivers are common for flexible travel.

Where to Stay

Bávaro and El Cortecito are convenient for all-inclusive resorts, beach access, restaurants and nightlife. Cap Cana offers upscale hotels, a marina and golf, Uvero Alto has quieter resorts, and Higüey provides more budget-friendly local accommodation.

Food & Drink

Resorts serve international buffets, while local restaurants offer Dominican dishes such as mofongo, sancocho, fresh seafood and tostones, often with mamajuana. El Cortecito, Los Corales and Higüey are good places to try independent cafés and comedores.
