About Saint Peter
Saint Peter is one of Dominica's ten administrative parishes, stretching along the island's rugged northwest coast between the Caribbean Sea and the forested highlands of the Northern Forest Reserve. It is the least populous parish in the country, centred on three small settlements: Colihaut, the parish capital and largest village, plus Dublanc and Bioche.
Colihaut anchors the parish as a long-established coastal village with a working fishing community, located roughly 14 miles north of Roseau along the west coast road. The three villages developed around a steep volcanic coastline, where fishing boats, small beaches, rocky headlands and views of the sea shape everyday life.
Much of the parish interior is rainforest and part of the Northern Forest Reserve, which extends into Morne Diablotin National Park. Trails such as Colihaut Heights and the Kashibona route, along with sections of the Waitukubuli National Trail, give access to birdwatching, rivers and forest, including sightings of Dominica's national birds, the Sisserou and Jaco parrots.
Because Saint Peter is quieter and less commercial than Roseau or Portsmouth, it appeals to travellers seeking a slow-paced, village-based experience. Small guesthouses, community tourism initiatives and local cookshops allow visitors to experience everyday Creole culture, coastal views and easy access to nature.
For both leisure and business visitors, the parish offers a useful base between Dominica's two main towns, with Roseau to the south and Portsmouth to the north reachable by the west coast highway. International arrivals through Douglas-Charles Airport connect to the area by road across the island.
