About Saint Paul
Saint Paul is one of Dominica's ten administrative parishes, stretching from the Caribbean coast around Canefield, Mahaut and Massacre into the island's mountainous interior. Its administrative centre, Pont Cassé, sits at a major road junction in the highlands and is a familiar stop for travellers crossing between Roseau and the east coast.
The parish reflects Dominica's layered history. The coastal village of Massacre takes its name from a 1674 attack on the island's indigenous Kalinago people by European settlers, while former estates such as Belfast Estate recall the colonial plantation era. Creole and Kalinago traditions remain part of local life today.
Saint Paul is a gateway to Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Near Pont Cassé, a short forest trail leads to the Emerald Pool, one of the park's most accessible waterfalls, and Middleham Falls drops deep within the rainforest on a Boeri River tributary. The long-distance Waitukubuli National Trail also passes through the area.
Settlements range from the coastal communities of Canefield, home to the island's smaller second airport, and Mahaut to the cooler interior villages around Pont Cassé. The parish's roads connect Roseau with the east and north of Dominica, making it a practical base for nature tourism and independent exploration.
For travellers, Saint Paul combines proximity to the capital with access to rainforest, waterfalls and hiking. Canefield is about 15 minutes from Roseau by road, while Dominica's main international gateway, Douglas-Charles Airport, is roughly an hour away.

Saint Paul Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The driest months from December to April offer the most reliable conditions for hiking, waterfalls and scenic drives. Saint Paul's rainforest can see showers at any time of year, and the June-to-November hurricane season brings heavier rain and occasional storms.
How to Get Around
Minibuses connect the main settlements along the coastal and cross-island roads, and taxis are available from Roseau and Pont Cassé. Renting a four-wheel-drive vehicle is practical for reaching interior trailheads, and driving is on the left.
Where to Stay
Roseau, just south of the parish, offers the widest choice of hotels and services, while Canefield and Mahaut provide quieter coastal stays. Eco-lodges and guesthouses in the highlands around Pont Cassé suit hikers exploring Morne Trois Pitons National Park.
Food & Drink
Local eating centres on Creole cooking with fresh fish, provisions, callaloo and seasonal fruit, often served with local rum or fresh juice. Roadside stalls and small village restaurants cover the coastal communities, while Roseau adds a broader range of dining nearby.
