About Kwango

Kenge is the capital of Kwango Province in the south-western Democratic Republic of the Congo. Set on rolling, erosion-prone hills beside National Road 1, the town sits roughly 270 km east of Kinshasa and serves as the administrative and trading heart of a mainly agricultural province that reaches the Angolan border.

The town grew from a colonial post established in 1890 and became the Kwango district capital in 1954, later gaining city status in 1982. When the former Bandundu province was divided in 2015, Kenge was named capital of the new Kwango Province. A white-painted monument known as La Pleureuse (The Weeping Woman) in the centre commemorates victims of the May 1997 killings and remains one of the town's most meaningful landmarks.

Kenge is divided into five communes, including Cinq Mai, Laurent-Désiré Kabila, Manonga, Masikita and Mavula. Everyday life revolves around the central market, the provincial administration, St. Paul's church and small craft workshops. Within reach of the town, travellers can visit the Tsakala-Mvidi falls about 60 km away, palm plantations and landscapes along the Kwango River, which forms part of the border with Angola.

The local economy is built on cassava, maize, palm oil and trade, with the Yaka people's traditions of sculpture, masks and initiation ceremonies giving the area a distinctive cultural identity. Kenge functions mainly as a provincial service centre, with modest shops, guesthouses, health and education facilities and a small local airstrip.

For leisure travellers, Kenge offers an authentic introduction to rural Congolese life and Yaka heritage, while business and NGO visitors come for provincial administration, agriculture and development work. Its position on National Road 1 makes it a practical stop between Kinshasa and the southern Kwango territories.

Kwango Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from about mid-May to August is the most comfortable time to visit Kenge, with less rain and easier conditions for travel on National Road 1 and unpaved local routes. Conditions often remain workable into September before the heavy rains return.

How to Get Around

Central Kenge is compact and easy to explore on foot, while motorcycle taxis and shared taxis connect the communes and nearby villages. For outlying attractions such as the Tsakala-Mvidi falls, a rented 4x4 or a private driver is more practical.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Kenge is limited and mostly consists of small guesthouses and simple lodges near the city centre and the main road. It is wise to confirm bookings in advance, as facilities are more basic than in Kinshasa.

Food & Drink

Meals centre on cassava staples such as chikwangue and pondu, along with maize, grilled fish and dishes seasoned with palm oil. The central market and small local restaurants, often called malewa, offer an affordable taste of everyday Congolese cooking.
