About Kasaï

Tshikapa is the capital of Kasaï Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, set on the Kasai River near its confluence with the Tshikapa River. The city is closely identified with the region's alluvial diamond trade and serves as an administrative and commercial centre for the surrounding province.

The city grew after diamonds were discovered in the area in the early 1900s, when the American-Belgian mining consortium Forminière established operations near Tshikapa. Diamond mining and trading remain central to the local economy, giving the city a practical, work-driven character shaped by the river and the road routes that connect it to other parts of the Kasaï region.

Tshikapa is divided by the Tshikapa River, with areas such as Kanzala on one side and Dibumba on the other, each with its own football stadium. Daily life revolves around markets including the Marché Central and the newer Marché de la réconciliation, where food, household goods and local produce are bought and sold.

Outside the city, the Mai-Munene Falls on the Kasai River lie roughly 36 kilometres away and are one of the region's most accessible natural sights. Tshikapa Airport (TSH) provides the main air link, while road travel connects the city toward Kananga and the Angolan border area near Dundo.

For business travellers, Tshikapa is relevant mainly for diamond-sector activity, provincial administration and logistics in Kasaï Province. Leisure visitors are rare, and trips require careful planning around road conditions, seasonal rainfall and current security information.

Kasaï Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, roughly May to September, is generally the easiest time to visit Tshikapa because road access and movement around the city are less affected by heavy rain. From about October to April, rains can make rural roads and trips to nearby attractions such as Mai-Munene Falls more difficult.

How to Get Around

Within Tshikapa, motorcycle taxis known locally as motos and shared taxis are the main forms of local transport; agree on the fare before setting off. Central areas around the markets and riverfront can be explored on foot, while private drivers and rented vehicles are useful for airport transfers and business travel.

Where to Stay

Accommodation options in Tshikapa are limited and concentrated mainly in the city centre, close to the markets, administrative buildings and the river. Many visitors stay in local guesthouses, so it is best to confirm facilities, location and security arrangements before booking.

Food & Drink

Local dining is built around Congolese staples such as fufu, saka-saka, grilled fish from the Kasai River, rice and plantains. The Marché Central and the modern Marché de la réconciliation are good places to find fresh produce and simple local meals, with small restaurants and cafés clustered in the centre.
