About Ituri

Ituri is a province in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, with Bunia as its capital and main commercial hub. Bordered by Uganda and Lake Albert to the east, the province is known for the dense Ituri Rainforest, highland farming areas and a long history of trade and mining.

The Ituri Forest and the UNESCO-listed Okapi Wildlife Reserve are among the region's most significant natural landmarks, protecting forest elephants, okapis and other wildlife. Lake Albert forms part of the eastern boundary and supports fishing communities, while the Mount Hoyo area adds highland forest to the province's varied landscape.

Bunia is the province's urban centre, with markets, government offices, aid agencies and the regional airport. Around it, territories such as Irumu, Djugu, Mambasa, Mahagi and Aru are home to Hema, Lendu, Alur, Mbuti and other communities, each with distinct languages and traditions.

Gold mining, coffee, agriculture and cross-border trade with Uganda shape the local economy, alongside a strong humanitarian and peacekeeping presence. Security conditions vary, and visitors should follow current travel advice and work with experienced local contacts.

For travellers, Ituri is above all a gateway to the Ituri Rainforest and the Okapi reserve, with practical services concentrated in Bunia. It suits researchers, conservation visitors and business travellers more than mainstream tourism, and every trip requires careful planning.

Ituri Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The drier months from December to February and June to August are generally easier for road travel and outdoor excursions. Heavy rains can make rural routes muddy and slow, so planning around the dry seasons helps.

How to Get Around

Bunia is the main transport base, with motorbike taxis and shared taxis for movement within the city. For journeys between towns and into rural areas, a 4x4 vehicle with local route knowledge is the most practical option.

Where to Stay

Bunia has the widest choice of guesthouses, small hotels and NGO-oriented accommodation in the province. Options outside the capital are limited, making Bunia the practical base for trips to the forest, Lake Albert or the Okapi reserve.

Food & Drink

Local meals centre on cassava, plantains, rice, beans and fish from Lake Albert, served in simple restaurants and markets in Bunia. The surrounding highlands also produce coffee, and small cafés and roadside stalls offer everyday Congolese dishes.
