About Znojmo
Znojmo is a historic wine town in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic, set on a rocky plateau above the Dyje River near the Austrian border. Its medieval centre, sunny climate and surrounding vineyards give it a distinctly laid-back, southern character compared with the country's larger cities.
The town's past reaches back to a Přemyslid stronghold founded at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries, and in 1226 Přemysl Otakar I made Znojmo the first royal town in South Moravia. The Romanesque Rotunda of St. Catherine, decorated with rare 11th-century frescoes, the Gothic Church of St. Nicholas and the remains of Znojmo Castle preserve this long history, while sections of the old town walls still stand.
Around the historic centre, Masaryk Square and the Old Town Hall Tower mark the heart of the town. Beneath the streets, the Znojmo Underground offers tours through a network of medieval cellars and passages. Beyond the centre, vineyards, wine cellars and the protected landscapes of Podyjí National Park along the Dyje River provide easy day trips for walking and cycling.
Znojmo is strongly associated with South Moravian wine and its famous sweet-and-sour pickled cucumbers, known across the country; local dishes such as Znojmo goulash appear on menus alongside modern cafés and wine bars. Seasonal wine festivals and cellar events draw visitors, and the town's position roughly halfway between Brno and Vienna gives it useful regional and cross-border connections.
For leisure travellers, Znojmo offers history, food and nature in a compact, walkable setting, while business visitors find it a practical base in South Moravia with links to Brno and Vienna. The town works well as a slower-paced alternative or stopover for those exploring Moravia's wine country.
