About Niari

Dolisie, also called Loubomo, is the third-largest city in the Republic of the Congo and the administrative centre of Niari Department. It lies in the Niari Valley at the eastern edge of the Mayombe rainforest, on the corridor linking the port of Pointe-Noire with Brazzaville.

The city grew around a station on the Congo–Ocean Railway and was named after Albert Dolisie, a lieutenant of the explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza. Between 1975 and 1991 it was officially known as Loubomo, and its railway and trading heritage still shape daily life.

Key sights include the Arbre de Brazza, a large baobab linked to de Brazza about eight kilometres from the centre on the road toward Pointe-Noire, and the Église Saint Paul. The lively Grand Marché is the place to find fresh produce, fish and everyday goods, while the Tsoulou reserve north of town is known for the Monts de la Lune and the Rivière Bleue, and Loubomo Falls sits a short drive away.

As a commercial and transit centre, Dolisie connects agriculture, timber and trade across the Niari region, with the railway and the RN1 carrying both freight and passengers. For travellers, the city is a practical base for exploring the surrounding forest, falls and small towns, as well as a stopover between Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville.

Niari Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The June-to-September dry season is the most practical time to visit, with drier roads and easier access to the forest and falls. A shorter dry spell in January and February can also offer good travelling conditions.

How to Get Around

Shared taxis and minibuses serve the centre and surrounding neighbourhoods, while motorbike taxis are common for short trips. The Congo–Ocean Railway links Dolisie with Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville, and the RN1 is the main road for intercity travel.

Where to Stay

Most accommodation is concentrated around the city centre and near the railway station, ranging from simple guesthouses to small hotels. Staying centrally makes it easier to reach the market, station and main road.

Food & Drink

The Grand Marché is the best place to sample fresh fruit, fish and local produce, while small restaurants and cafés around the centre serve Congolese staples such as cassava, plantains and grilled fish.
