About Likouala
Impfondo is the capital of Likouala Department in northern Republic of the Congo, set on the west bank of the Oubangui River opposite the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As a remote river town surrounded by dense equatorial forest, it has a frontier character and serves as an administrative and supply hub for the wider Likouala region.
Known in colonial times as Desbordesville, Impfondo grew from the early 20th century as a stop on the river route between Brazzaville and Bangui. Its history remains visible in the modest town layout, the busy riverfront and the barge traffic that still links it with communities along the Oubangui.
The town's main landmarks are its lively central market, the riverside docks and the broad Oubangui River itself, where pirogues and cargo boats arrive throughout the day. Impfondo is best known as the main gateway to the Lac Télé Community Reserve, a vast wetland and forest area famous for its lowland gorillas and local legends.
Daily life centres on the market, small shops and simple restaurants serving Congolese dishes such as river fish with cassava. Timber, river trade and public administration drive the local economy, and motorcycle taxis are the most common way to move around the town.
For travellers, Impfondo offers a base for river excursions, rainforest visits and trips toward Lac Télé, as well as a practical entry point for researchers, aid workers and business visitors heading into northern Congo. It is reached mainly by air through Impfondo Airport or by river barge from Brazzaville.
