About Cesar

Valledupar is the capital of Colombia's Cesar Department and the cultural heart of the vallenato music tradition, set in the Caribbean lowlands between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Cesar River valley. Its warm climate, riverfront recreation and strong musical identity give the city a relaxed, distinctive character.

Founded in 1550 by Spanish colonists in a valley ruled by the indigenous cacique Upar, Valledupar grew into an agricultural and trading centre. It became capital of Cesar when the department was created in 1967, and its history is still visible around the colonial-era Plaza Alfonso López and nearby churches and monuments.

The main attractions include Plaza Alfonso López Pumarejo, the Cathedral of the Rosary and the Accordion Museum at Casa Beto Murgas. Visitors also swim in the cool Guatapurí River at the Hurtado bathing spot, hike in the Los Besotes eco-park or travel toward the Sierra Nevada communities such as Nabusímake.

Each April the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata fills the city with accordion competitions, concerts and parades, drawing musicians and audiences from across Colombia. The city's food scene mixes Caribbean Colombian dishes with fresh fruit, street snacks and lively bars where vallenato and other local rhythms are played.

For business travellers, Valledupar serves as a commercial and administrative hub for Cesar's agricultural and mining economy, with events, trade fairs and conference activity centred on the city. Its airport, Alfonso López Pumarejo, connects it to Bogotá and other Colombian cities, making it accessible for both leisure and work trips.
