About Tianjin
Tianjin is a major coastal city in northern China and one of the country's four direct-administered municipalities, located about 120 kilometres southeast of Beijing on the Bohai Sea. The city combines a large modern port and financial district with a distinctive historic core shaped by the Hai River and its former foreign concessions.
Tianjin's character reflects its long history as a trading, garrison and treaty-port city. The Five Great Avenues area preserves a striking collection of early 20th-century European-style villas, while the Italian Style Town, Ancient Culture Street and the riverside Tianjin Eye Ferris wheel give visitors a clear sense of the city's layered identity.
Central districts such as Heping, Nankai and Hexi contain the main shopping streets, museums and restaurants. Highlights include Tianjin Museum, the Porcelain House and Nanshi Food Street, while the Binhai New Area east of the centre is home to the Port of Tianjin, modern business zones and coastal development.
As an economic centre, Tianjin is important for manufacturing, logistics, finance and international trade. The Binhai New Area and Yujiapu Financial District anchor much of this activity, and the city's universities and exhibition venues support a steady flow of conferences and business travel.
Tianjin is convenient for both leisure and business visitors, with high-speed rail linking it to Beijing in around 30 minutes. Its local food scene, from Goubuli baozi and jianbing to fresh Bohai seafood, and its tradition of crosstalk comedy add to a distinct northern Chinese urban experience.
