About Logone Occidental
Moundou is Chad's second-largest city and the commercial heart of Logone Occidental region, set in the fertile cotton-growing south-west roughly 475 km south of N'Djamena. It combines a working regional capital's everyday bustle with the character of an older colonial trading town.
Founded in 1923 under French colonial rule, Moundou grew from a small riverside post into a centre of cotton cultivation and trade. The Ngambai people form the largest community, and French and Arabic serve as official languages while Ngambai remains widely spoken.
The Sacred Heart Cathedral, the central market and Independence Square anchor the city centre. Around them, Moundou's districts mix faded colonial buildings, simple brick houses, busy market lanes and newer commercial streets.
Industry defines much of the local economy: cotton ginning and oil and soap production operate alongside the historic Brasseries du Logone brewery, maker of Gala beer, and a cigarette factory. Markets and roadside trade link the city to surrounding cotton and farming areas.
For travellers, Moundou serves as the main gateway to south-western Chad and a practical stop on the road between N'Djamena and Sarh. Its airport, hotels and markets support both business visitors connected to agriculture and industry and leisure travellers exploring the region.

Logone Occidental Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from November to April is the most comfortable time to visit Moundou, with lower rainfall and more reliable road conditions. The wet season from May to October brings heavy rains that can make travel around the region slower.
How to Get Around
Moundou is small enough to explore partly on foot, while taxis and motorcycle taxis handle most trips across the city. For regional journeys, visitors typically rely on shared taxis, buses, private transfers or a rented 4x4, since roads can be rough in the wet season.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is concentrated in and near the centre, close to the market, cathedral and main commercial streets. Small hotels and guesthouses provide the most common options, and booking ahead is wise during business and harvest-season travel.
Food & Drink
Local meals feature grilled meat, peanut and okra sauces, rice, millet and fish from the Logone river system. Markets, street stalls and simple restaurants offer daily Chadian dishes, while Gala beer from the city's brewery is a distinctive local drink.
