About Ribeira Grande

Ribeira Grande is a municipality on the north coast of Santo Antão, Cape Verde's mountainous, green northwestern island. It centres on the small port town of Ponta do Sol, the municipal seat, and the older settlement of Ribeira Grande, also called Povoação, set among terraced hillsides and deep valleys. The area is known for some of the archipelago's most dramatic scenery, with steep cliffs, fertile ravines and wide ocean views.

The region's identity is rooted in Portuguese settlement and generations of small-scale farming. Sugar cane has long been grown in the valleys, and traditional presses known as trapiches still turn it into grogue, the local cane spirit, often served as sweetened ponche. In Povoação, the 19th-century church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário and old Portuguese houses give the town a quieter, historic character beside the livelier seaside of Ponta do Sol.

Most visitors come to Ribeira Grande for walking. Trails descend from the high plateau through the Ribeira Grande valley and along the rocky northern coast, linking villages such as Ponta do Sol, Cruzinha and Chã de Igreja. Neighbouring Paul offers the lush Paul Valley and the Cova crater rim, both easy to combine with a stay in Ribeira Grande.

Ponta do Sol has a small fishing harbour and a compact choice of guesthouses and restaurants, while Povoação works as a base for exploring the interior. The municipality produces grogue, coffee and fruit, and small-scale tourism supports local guides, drivers and rural stays. Its remote character keeps the pace slow and community-based.

For travellers, Ribeira Grande suits slow travel, guided excursions and nature tourism, serving as both a hiking base and a scenic destination. The nearest operational airport is on São Vicente, reached by ferry to Porto Novo and then a winding coastal drive across Santo Antão.

Ribeira Grande Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to June is the most reliable period for hiking, with mild temperatures and clearer valley and coastal trails. July to October can bring rain and muddy paths, though the landscape becomes especially green.

How to Get Around

Shared minibuses known as aluguers link Ponta do Sol, Povoação and Porto Novo, while taxis and private drivers handle trailheads and remote villages. Roads are narrow and winding, and many of the best coastal paths are explored on foot.

Where to Stay

Ponta do Sol has the largest concentration of guesthouses and small hotels, many with sea views. Povoação and villages in the interior offer simpler pensions and rural stays, while Porto Novo is a practical alternative near the ferry port.

Food & Drink

Local meals feature fresh fish, cachupa and produce from the valleys, alongside coffee and fruit. Ribeira Grande is known for grogue and sweetened ponche, which can be tasted at small trapiche distilleries and cafés across the area.
