About Praia

Praia is the capital and largest city of Cape Verde, built on a series of plateaus above the Atlantic on the southern coast of Santiago island. The historic Plateau district remains the city's focal point, while modern neighbourhoods, a busy port and nearby beaches give Praia a mix of colonial heritage and contemporary island life.

The city grew after the decline of Cidade Velha and became the capital of the archipelago in 1770. Around Praça Alexandre Albuquerque, the Plateau preserves pastel-coloured colonial buildings, the neoclassical Presidential Palace, the Nossa Senhora da Graça church and old military structures, while the ethnographic museum traces Cape Verdean culture and everyday traditions.

Beyond the Plateau, Sucupira Market is one of the region's most energetic open markets, selling clothing, crafts and food. Beaches such as Quebra Canela and Prainha offer sand and ocean views close to the centre, and neighbourhoods including Achada Santo António and Palmarejo contain restaurants, cafés and local nightlife. Just outside the city, Cidade Velha (Ribeira Grande de Santiago) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest European settlement in the tropics.

As the seat of government and the country's main commercial and port city, Praia attracts business travellers alongside leisure visitors. Its food scene centres on cachupa, grilled fish and seafood, and its music links morna, funaná and batuque traditions to a lively calendar of festivals, carnival celebrations and cultural events.

For travellers, Praia works as both a destination and a gateway to Santiago island and the wider archipelago, offering history, beaches, markets and a practical base for exploring Cape Verde.

Praia Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Praia is pleasant year-round, but the dry season from November to June is the most comfortable for sightseeing and beach time. July to October brings higher humidity and the chance of rain, while February's carnival adds extra energy to the city.

How to Get Around

The city is served by shared minibuses known as hiaces and taxis, which connect the Plateau, Palmarejo, Achada Santo António and other districts. The historic centre is walkable, while taxis or a rental car are useful for reaching beaches and day-trip destinations around Santiago island.

Where to Stay

The Plateau is best for easy access to historic landmarks and government areas, while Prainha and Quebra Canela offer quieter beachside hotels and embassies. Palmarejo and Achada Santo António have modern apartments, restaurants and convenient connections to the airport and main roads.

Food & Drink

Cachupa, a slow-cooked stew of corn, beans and meat or fish, is the national dish, and fresh tuna, lobster and other seafood are common around Praia. Local cafés and restaurants serve Cape Verdean and Portuguese-influenced cooking, often accompanied by grogue or a local fruit juice.
