About Zondoma

Zondoma is a province in Burkina Faso's Nord Region, with the town of Gourcy as its capital and main commercial centre. It lies along the national route between Ouagadougou and Ouahigouya, making it a practical stopover and market hub in northern Burkina Faso.

Gourcy holds a notable place in regional history as the first capital of the Yatenga kingdom, founded in the 14th century by Naba Yadega. The Naba Yadega mausoleum remains an important local heritage site, while the ancient iron-smelting furnaces of Kindibo are part of Burkina Faso's UNESCO-listed ancient ferrous metallurgy sites.

Zondoma's character is largely rural and Sahelian, with millet and sorghum farming, livestock keeping and regular village markets shaping daily life. Around Gourcy, visitors can explore the Birigui Julien Ouedraogo Museum, the Naba Baongo Grove and Naba Warma Square, as well as the central market.

Gourcy functions as the province's administrative, transport and services hub, with small guesthouses, maquis restaurants, shops and motorcycle taxis. It provides a practical base for reaching nearby heritage sites and for experiencing Mossi culture and local hospitality.

For travellers, Zondoma works best as a manageable stop between Ouagadougou and Ouahigouya, offering local history, markets and a quieter northern Burkina Faso experience rather than large-scale tourism.

Zondoma Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time to visit, with cooler temperatures and better road conditions. June to September brings rains that can make rural routes difficult, while March to May is often very hot.

How to Get Around

Gourcy is compact enough to explore on foot, with motorcycle taxis for short trips. Shared taxis and buses run along the Ouagadougou–Yako–Ouahigouya road, while a rented car or private driver is useful for visiting rural sites in the province.

Where to Stay

Gourcy has a small number of guesthouses and auberges, mostly near the centre and the main road. Ouahigouya, about 40 km north, offers more choice for travellers who want a wider range of accommodation.

Food & Drink

Local cooking is built around tô, a millet or sorghum paste served with leaf, peanut or okra sauces, plus rice dishes, beans and grilled meat. Gourcy's market and small maquis offer affordable meals, while tea and local drinks are common in the town.
