About Yatenga

Yatenga is a province in Burkina Faso's Nord Region, anchored by Ouahigouya, its capital and the main urban and trading centre of the northern Sahelian plains. The area sits near the border with Mali and is a historic Mossi heartland, where markets, royal traditions and rural craft villages shape daily life.

Ouahigouya grew from the Mossi kingdom of Yatenga, which reached its height under Naba Kango in the 18th century, when the town was established as royal capital. Visitors still see this heritage at the Yatenga Naaba's palace, the Place Naba Kango and nearby royal tombs, alongside the town's Sahelian earthen mosques and busy central market.

Around Ouahigouya, rural villages are known for weaving, leatherwork and metalwork, and the surrounding savanna is dotted with small dams and seasonal lakes that support farming and herding. These landscapes offer a calmer, more traditional contrast to Burkina Faso's larger southern cities.

Yatenga serves as an administrative, transport and commercial hub for the north, with trade in grain, livestock, cotton and crafts and road connections toward Ouagadougou and the Malian border. Hotels, guesthouses, maquis and local markets provide practical services for regional officials, business travellers and visitors.

For travellers, Yatenga combines Mossi royal history, Sahelian architecture and market life with access to northern Burkina Faso's rural landscapes, while Ouahigouya offers the region's main services and onward connections.

Where to Stay

Most accommodation in Yatenga is concentrated in central Ouahigouya near the market and main roads, with a mix of small hotels and guesthouses. Choices are modest, so it is best to book ahead during market days and regional events.

Food & Drink

Local food centres on millet and sorghum dishes such as tô served with sauces, along with rice, grilled meat and seasonal vegetables. Small maquis, street food stalls and tea stands are common, and the central market offers fresh produce and snacks.
