About Sud-Ouest

Gaoua is the capital of Burkina Faso's Sud-Ouest Region and Poni Province, a market town set among the red-earth hills of the country's southwest near the borders with Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. Known as the capital of Lobi country, the town remains closely tied to the Lobi people's traditions, sacred sites and fortified earthen architecture.

The town's identity draws on the Lobi, who migrated from present-day northern Ghana around the 18th century, alongside Dagara, Birifor, Gan and other communities. This heritage is documented at the Poni Museum, also called the Musée des Civilisations des Peuples du Sud-Ouest, and remains visible in the sacred grove, caves and local customs.

About 40 km west of Gaoua, the Ruins of Loropéni form Burkina Faso's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, a stone enclosure believed to be roughly a thousand years old and the best preserved of several in the area. Traditional Lobi villages such as Doudou, with their fortress-like compounds, are among the region's most distinctive sights.

Gaoua serves as an agricultural and trading centre for the surrounding countryside, with markets linking farmers and traders from the wider Sud-Ouest Region. The town has basic services, road connections and a small airport, making it a practical base for exploring the southwest.

For travellers, Gaoua is above all a gateway to Lobi culture and the Loropéni ruins rather than a large urban destination. Both leisure and business visitors use the town as a stopover and staging point for journeys through southern Burkina Faso toward neighbouring countries.

Sud-Ouest Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season, roughly from November to February, is the most comfortable period for visiting Gaoua and travelling the unpaved roads of the southwest. Temperatures climb sharply from March to May before the rains return around June.

How to Get Around

Gaoua is compact enough to explore on foot or by motorcycle taxi, while shared taxis and bush taxis link the town with nearby villages. A 4x4 is useful for reaching outlying Lobi villages and the Ruins of Loropéni.

Where to Stay

Most visitor accommodation is found in Gaoua town itself, with simple hotels, guesthouses and auberges serving the southwest. Staying near the centre gives convenient access to the market, museum and transport connections.

Food & Drink

Local food centres on tô, a millet or sorghum paste served with sauces, along with rice, grilled meat and seasonal produce from regional markets. Small restaurants and street stalls in Gaoua offer everyday Burkinabé cooking, with limited international options.
