About Centre-Nord
Kaya, the capital of Burkina Faso's Centre-Nord region, is a crossroads town on the main road north from Ouagadougou and one of the country's most distinctive craft centres. The town is best known for its leatherworkers, whose workshops and market stalls shape much of local daily life.
The region lies in the transition between Burkina Faso's central plateau and the Sahel, giving it a dry, sun-baked landscape with baobab trees, seasonal lakes and Mossi farming villages. Kaya itself mixes a busy central market, mosques, a cathedral and simple colonial-era and modern buildings.
Visitors can explore the Halle des Artisans leather workshops near the grand marché, the ethnographic museum, and the Musée des fourneaux, which preserves traditional iron-smelting furnaces alongside the archaeological furnaces at Tiwèga. Lake Dem, just outside town, and Lac Bam in the Bam province offer quieter waterside stops.
Local festivals such as Wedbindé, Warba and Kaya Nooma celebrate forging, dance and Mossi traditions, while the livestock and grain markets keep Kaya at the heart of regional trade. The region is also a practical gateway between the capital and the Sahel.
For leisure travellers, Centre-Nord offers an authentic look at Mossi culture, crafts and rural life; for business visitors, it is a centre for regional administration, trade, agriculture and small-scale mining.

Centre-Nord Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
November to February is the most comfortable period, with the dry season bringing cooler mornings, sunny days and easier road travel. The rainy season from June to October can make some rural roads difficult.
How to Get Around
Kaya is small enough to explore on foot, while moto-taxis and shared taxis cover the town and nearby villages. Shared taxis and minibuses link Kaya with Ouagadougou and other regional towns, and a private driver or rental car is useful for wider Centre-Nord travel.
Where to Stay
Most accommodation is concentrated in central Kaya near the grand marché and the main Ouagadougou road, ranging from small guesthouses and auberges to modest hotels. Options are limited, so booking ahead is sensible, especially during festivals and market days.
Food & Drink
Local Mossi cooking centres on tô, a millet or sorghum paste served with leaf, peanut or okra sauces, along with riz gras and grilled meat. Maquis and street stalls around the market serve brochettes, beans and sorghum beer (dolo).
