About Varna
Varna is Bulgaria's maritime capital and third-largest city, set around the Gulf of Varna on the Black Sea coast. It combines a working port, long sandy beaches and a lively seaside promenade with centuries of layered history, and is the main gateway to the northern Black Sea resorts.
The city began as the Greek colony of Odessos in the 6th century BC and later became a Roman and Byzantine trading centre. Remains of that past survive at the Roman Thermae, one of the largest bath complexes in the Balkans, while the Archaeological Museum displays the Varna Necropolis gold treasure, considered among the world's oldest processed gold. The golden-domed Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral anchors the centre.
Varna's best-known public space is the Sea Garden, a coastal park stretching along the shore with a dolphinarium, aquarium, zoo and the Naval Museum. The compact Greek Quarter preserves late 19th- and early 20th-century buildings and café-lined streets, while the Primorski district fronts the beaches and Asparuhovo lies to the south across the Asparuhov Bridge. Just north of the city, Aladzha Monastery is a medieval rock monastery near the Golden Sands resort.
Alongside tourism, Varna is a significant Black Sea port and a centre for shipbuilding, logistics, education and a growing technology and outsourcing sector. Its universities and business districts support conferences and trade, while events such as the Varna International Ballet Competition and the Varna Summer International Music Festival bring international visitors through the year.
For visitors, the city works as both a beach destination and a cultural stopover: central hotels, waterfront dining and the nearby resorts make it easy to combine sun and sea with museums, heritage and urban life. Its port, airport and coastal connections also make Varna a practical hub for business travel along the north-eastern Black Sea.
