About Ruse

Ruse is Bulgaria's largest Danube port city and a historic gateway between the Balkans and Romania, set on the river's high right bank. Often called "Little Vienna", the city is known for its elegant late-19th- and early-20th-century architecture, restored Revival-era facades and a relaxed riverfront atmosphere.

The city grew from a Roman-era settlement and flourished as a trade and consular centre during the Ottoman period and the Bulgarian National Revival. In 1866, Ruse became the terminus of the first railway line in the Bulgarian lands, the Ruse–Varna line, and its prosperity remains visible in landmark buildings around Freedom Square (ploshtad Svoboda).

At the heart of Ruse, Freedom Square is framed by the neo-baroque Dohodno Zdanie (Profit-Yielding Building), the Monument of Liberty and surrounding monuments, while the central Tsentar district holds museums, cafés and shopping streets. Visitors can explore the Regional History Museum, the Ecomuseum with its aquarium, the National Museum of Transport and Communications, and house-museums linked to the city's Revival-era heritage, then walk the Danube promenade.

Ruse remains northern Bulgaria's main transport, logistics, business and cultural centre, with a working river port, industrial zones and the Danube Bridge connecting it to Giurgiu in Romania. Ruse University "Angel Kanchev" and a year-round calendar of festivals, concerts and exhibitions add to the city's international outlook.

For travellers, Ruse offers an accessible blend of riverside leisure, architecture and practical business connections, making it a convenient stop between Bulgaria and Romania and a distinctive destination on the lower Danube.
