About Pará
Belém is the capital of the state of Pará and the largest city of the eastern Amazon, set where the Guamá River meets the wider mouth of the Amazon. Founded by the Portuguese in 1616, it grew from a riverside fort into a major port and the region's main gateway, earning it the popular nickname Gateway to the Amazon.
The city's colonial past remains visible in Cidade Velha, where the Forte do Presépio marks the original settlement and the 18th-century Igreja da Sé overlooks the old port. Later wealth from the rubber boom shaped the ornate Theatro da Paz and grand waterfront buildings, while modern landmarks such as Estação das Docas have turned restored warehouses into a lively riverside promenade.
Neighbourhoods add variety to the centre: Nazaré and Batista Campos are known for their parks and older streets, Umarizal concentrates much of the city's dining and nightlife, and Cidade Velha and Campina hold the main historic sights. Museums such as the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi and attractions including Mangal das Garças offer an introduction to Amazonian nature and culture.
Food and festivals are central to local identity. The Ver-o-Peso market, one of the largest open-air markets in Latin America, anchors daily trade in fish, fruit, herbs and açaí, while dishes such as tacacá, maniçoba and pato no tucupi define Pará's distinctive cuisine. Each October, the Círio de Nazaré draws vast crowds in one of Brazil's most important religious processions.
As a regional centre for commerce, education and logistics, Belém also plays a key role in business travel and will host COP30 in November 2025. For leisure and business visitors alike, it offers a different Brazilian experience: a river-centred, culturally rich Amazonian capital rather than a coastal resort city.
