About North-West
Maun is the tourism capital of Botswana and the main gateway to the Okavango Delta. Set on the southern edge of the delta along the Thamalakane River, it combines a relaxed frontier-town atmosphere with a busy safari and aviation hub.
The town grew from a small Bayei settlement into the administrative centre of Ngamiland. Its heritage is reflected in the Nhabe Museum, the Old Mall market and craft stalls selling baskets and woodwork from the surrounding region.
Maun spreads across several areas rather than a single dense centre. The Old Mall area holds shops, banks and restaurants, while riverside areas such as Matlapaneng and Sedie offer quieter lodges, and outlying neighbourhoods serve residential and business needs.
As the base of Botswana's safari industry, Maun supports light-aircraft operators, 4x4 companies, mokoro trips and conservation organisations. Its restaurants, cafés and lodges serve travellers throughout the year, and tourism, aviation and wildlife work drive much of the local economy.
For leisure visitors, Maun is the launch point for delta safaris, mokoro excursions and trips to Moremi Game Reserve. For business travellers, it is a practical hub for tourism, aviation and conservation activity across northern Botswana.

North-West Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from May to October is the most popular time, with June to August offering peak delta floods and excellent wildlife viewing. Mornings can be cold, while November to April brings hotter, wetter weather and a greener landscape.
How to Get Around
Maun has no fixed local bus network, so visitors rely on taxis, rental cars, private transfers and lodge shuttles. A 4x4 is useful for game drives and bush roads, while mokoro trips and light aircraft connect travellers to the delta.
Where to Stay
The central Old Mall area is convenient for shops, banks and restaurants, while riverside neighbourhoods such as Matlapaneng and Sedie offer quieter guesthouses and lodges. Safari lodges outside town provide a more immersive Okavango experience.
Food & Drink
Local restaurants serve Setswana staples such as seswaa, pap, morogo and grilled meat, alongside international and lodge dining. The Old Mall market and cafés are good places to sample everyday food and pick up local produce.
