About Southern
Kanye is a town in southern Botswana and the administrative centre of the Southern District, about 83 kilometres southwest of Gaborone. Set on hilly ground at roughly 1,300 metres above sea level, it is the traditional home of the Bangwaketse people and offers a slower, more traditional contrast to the capital.
The town's history and identity are closely tied to the Bangwaketse, one of Botswana's major Tswana groups. Kgosi Bathoen II Memorial Museum records the area's chiefly history, while the Kanye Main Kgotla remains a traditional meeting place and customary court. Nearby landmarks such as King George V Memorial Hall and the Deborah Retief Memorial Church, built in 1903, reflect the town's colonial and missionary past.
Kanye's natural and cultural sights include the Kanye Gorge, a deep valley used as a refuge in the 19th century, and the Mmakgodumo Dam and bird sanctuary on the edge of town. Kgwakgwe Hill recalls the area's manganese mining history, and the Mmalekwa Royal Cemetery is an important heritage site for the Bangwaketse.
As a district capital, Kanye functions as a service and administrative hub for southern Botswana, with government offices, schools, a hospital and local commerce. The Mmakgodumo Festival and other cultural events draw visitors, while its position near the Gaborone-Jwaneng road makes it a practical stop for travellers and business visitors moving through the region.
For leisure travellers, Kanye offers accessible Tswana culture, scenic hill landscapes and an easy day trip from Gaborone. For business travellers, it serves as a regional administrative centre and a gateway to the wider Southern District and its mining and service economy.
