About Ghanzi
Ghanzi is the administrative centre of Ghanzi District and the main town of Botswana's western Kalahari, often described as the capital of the Kalahari. It sits along the Trans-Kalahari corridor between the Namibian border and the Okavango Delta, making it an important stop for travellers crossing this vast, semi-arid region.
The town grew from a small frontier settlement after Afrikaner traders and cattle farmers began arriving in the late 19th century. The first Afrikaner to settle, Hendrik van Zyl, set up a hunting and trading operation around 1870, and a larger Boer migration followed around 1897–1898. The Kalahari Arms Hotel, established in the town's early years, remains a central landmark.
Ghanzi has a diverse local identity shaped by Afrikaners, San (Basarwa), Bakgalagadi and Baherero communities. Kuru, a charity supporting San communities, runs a craft shop selling handmade Bushmen crafts, and the annual Ghanzi Agricultural Show in August is one of the region's best-known events, showcasing livestock and local culture.
Cattle ranching dominates the local economy, with Ghanzi farmers contributing a significant share of Botswana's beef exports. Recent copper-silver exploration has added a mining dimension to the district. For visitors, Ghanzi offers lodges, guesthouses and camps, as well as cultural and wildlife experiences linked to the Kalahari.
As a practical stopover between Kang and Maun, Ghanzi provides fuel, shops, banks, accommodation and supplies for travellers heading to the Okavango Delta or exploring the Kalahari, making it relevant for both independent road-trippers and business visitors.
