About Gaborone

Gaborone is the capital and largest city of Botswana, a relaxed and orderly city set in the country's south-eastern corner near the South African border. Government buildings, modern shopping centres and wide avenues define its centre, while its role as host of the Southern African Development Community gives it regional significance.

The city is relatively young. It was created in the mid-1960s as a purpose-built capital when the Bechuanaland Protectorate prepared for independence, and it was named after Chief Gaborone of the Tlokwa. Planned along garden city lines, Gaborone grew rapidly from a small administrative town into Botswana's economic and political heart.

Landmarks include the Three Dikgosi Monument, the National Museum and Art Gallery, the National Assembly building and the pedestrianised Main Mall. Outdoor escapes such as Kgale Hill, Gaborone Dam and the Gaborone Game Reserve sit close to the centre, while neighbourhoods including the Central Business District, The Village, Broadhurst, Gaborone West and the upmarket suburb of Phakalane each add a different character.

As the country's economic hub, Gaborone hosts the Botswana Stock Exchange, the diamond industry and numerous banks and businesses. It draws delegates for conferences and regional meetings, and its malls, hotels, restaurants and nightlife provide an easy base between work and leisure.

For travellers, Gaborone is a practical gateway to Botswana's safaris and to nearby reserves such as Mokolodi Nature Reserve. Its calm pace, warm climate and blend of government, commerce and culture make it relevant to both business visitors and tourists beginning a wider journey.

Gaborone Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry winter months from May to September bring mild, sunny days and cool nights, making them the most comfortable time for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Summer from November to March is hot with afternoon thunderstorms, but the landscape is greener.

How to Get Around

Gaborone is compact and fairly easy to navigate on foot in the centre, while shared minibus taxis known as combis, buses and metered taxis serve most areas. Rental cars and private drivers offer more comfort and flexibility, especially for business meetings or trips beyond the city.

Where to Stay

The Central Business District and areas near the Main Mall suit visitors who want government offices, malls and restaurants within easy reach. Phakalane offers quieter, more upmarket accommodation north of the centre, while The Village and Gaborone West have a more local feel.

Food & Drink

Local meals often centre on seswaa, a pounded beef dish, served with maize porridge and greens, while braai and international cuisine are widely available. Malls, cafés and restaurants around the city offer everything from quick lunches to relaxed dinners and evening drinks.
