About Sint Eustatius
Sint Eustatius, locally known as Statia, is a small Dutch Caribbean island and special municipality of the Netherlands. Its compact capital, Oranjestad, overlooks the Caribbean Sea and mixes restored Dutch colonial buildings with the ruins of a once-busy trading port, giving the island a quiet but historically rich character.
The island is best known for the First Salute, when Fort Oranje responded to an American ship in 1776 in what is seen as one of the first foreign acknowledgements of United States independence. Around Oranjestad, Upper Town and Lower Town still preserve landmarks such as Fort Oranje, the Dutch Reformed Church, the old synagogue ruins and colonial-era warehouses and residences.
Nature is a major draw for visitors. The Quill, a dormant volcano, rises to the south with hiking trails through Quill/Boven National Park to a crater rim and rainforest interior. Offshore, the St. Eustatius National Marine Park protects coral reefs, dive sites and shipwrecks, making Statia a low-key favourite for divers and snorkellers.
Daily life centres on Oranjestad, where small hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and shops serve both residents and visitors. The island has a modest year-round tourism and dive economy, supported by regular regional flights and a small but practical road network.
For leisure and business travellers alike, Sint Eustatius offers a calm, compact Caribbean destination with unusual history, strong nature-based activities and a straightforward pace that suits restful stays and small-group travel.
