About Grodno
Grodno is a historic city in western Belarus, close to the Polish and Lithuanian borders and set on the Neman River. It is one of the country's oldest urban centres and stands out for its well-preserved Old Town, royal heritage and relaxed riverside character.
The city's history reaches back to the 12th century, and it later became an important royal residence of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Old Castle and New Castle, together with the 12th-century Kalozha Church of Saints Boris and Gleb and the baroque St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, reflect this layered past.
Visitors spend much of their time around the compact historic centre, especially pedestrian Sovetskaya Street with its cafés, shops and restored facades. Museums, theatres and the riverside park add to the local experience, while Grodno's position near two European Union borders gives it a distinctive regional atmosphere.
As the administrative centre of Grodno Region, the city is a base for business, border trade, education and regional government. Yanka Kupala State University and local industries support its role as a working city rather than only a tourist destination.
Grodno offers a calmer, more traditional alternative to Minsk, with enough history, culture and local character to interest both leisure visitors and business travellers exploring western Belarus.
