About Gomel
Gomel, also known as Homiel, is Belarus's second-largest city and the administrative centre of Gomel Region in the country's south-east. Set on the banks of the Sozh River, it combines a long trading and industrial history with green parks and one of Belarus's most distinctive palace ensembles.
The city's best-known landmark is the Rumyantsev-Paskevich Palace, a neoclassical residence built in the late 18th century and later expanded, set within a landscaped park overlooking the Sozh. Nearby, the Peter and Paul Cathedral, the Paskevich family chapel and restored 19th-century buildings help define the historic centre.
The central area around Lenin Square and Sovetskaya Street is the main focus for visitors, with museums, cafés, shops and easy access to the palace and park complex. The riverside embankment and the city's large park offer relaxed walking routes and views over the Sozh.
Gomel is also an industrial and transport hub, known for machine-building, agricultural machinery production, food processing and chemical industries. Its business activity, universities and regional role make it a practical destination for work-related travel.
For leisure and business visitors alike, Gomel offers a compact, walkable centre, a distinctive cultural heritage and a quieter pace than the capital, with useful connections to Minsk and other Belarusian cities.
