About North Abaco
North Abaco is the northern district of the Abaco Islands in The Bahamas, a quiet, low-rise part of Great Abaco and nearby cays. Coopers Town is the administrative centre, while Treasure Cay is the best-known resort and marina community. The district's identity is shaped by the Sea of Abaco: shallow turquoise water, scattered cays, boatbuilding heritage and a relaxed, community-focused pace of life.
The area's history reaches back to the late 18th century, when Loyalists settled at Carleton Point near present-day Treasure Cay. Coopers Town later developed around the Cooper family and became the capital of North Abaco. In September 2019, Hurricane Dorian caused severe damage across the Abacos, and the district has since been steadily rebuilding homes, marinas and visitor services.
Treasure Cay Beach is the signature attraction, a roughly three-and-a-half-mile arc of powder-white sand and calm, shallow water. Nearby Green Turtle Cay, reached by a short ferry ride, preserves a Loyalist-era settlement at New Plymouth with small museums, quiet beaches and a strong boatbuilding tradition.
Boating and fishing define everyday life here, from bonefishing and sportfishing charters to sailing and island hopping between cays. Treasure Cay Marina is one of the larger full-service marinas in the Bahamas and a key stop for yachts, while the local golf course and waterfront restaurants round out a low-key visitor experience. Seafood such as conch, lobster, grouper and snapper anchors the local food scene.
North Abaco appeals to leisure travellers seeking uncrowded beaches, clear water and boating, while Treasure Cay Airport (TCB) links the district to Florida and Nassau. Business activity is concentrated around tourism, marina operations, property and ongoing reconstruction, giving the area relevance for both holiday visitors and working travellers.
