About Qabala

Qabala, also spelled Gabala, is a small city in northern Azerbaijan and the administrative centre of Qabala District. Set on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus in the Alazan–Haftaran valley, it is best known as a mountain resort destination with forested foothills, rivers and a growing ski and leisure scene.

The area has deep historical roots: nearby Chukhur Gabala preserves the ruins of an ancient walled city that served as a capital of Caucasian Albania from around the 4th century BC. Modern Qabala mixes this heritage with landmarks such as the Historical Ethnography Museum, a large war memorial and the Rashidbek monument, while older stone houses remain scattered through the town.

Around the city, visitors head to the Yeddi Gozel (Seven Beauties) Waterfall, Nohur Lake and the Tufandag Ski Complex, one of Azerbaijan's leading ski resorts with cable cars and year-round mountain activities. Qabaland amusement park and the surrounding Qafqaz resort hotels add family and leisure options.

Qabala also has a strong event culture: the Gabala International Music Festival has drawn classical and jazz performers since 2009, and the city has hosted regional gatherings such as the 2013 Turkic Council summit. Its resorts, conference facilities and proximity to Baku make it relevant for both leisure travellers and business events.

Whether visiting for skiing, history, mountain scenery or a quiet escape, Qabala offers a compact, scenic base for exploring northern Azerbaijan.
