About Lankaran
Lankaran is a subtropical city in southern Azerbaijan, set between the Caspian Sea coast and the forested Talysh Mountains. It is the main urban and cultural centre of the Talysh people and the heart of the country's tea-growing region, surrounded by citrus orchards, rice fields and green valleys that give the city a distinctly lush character.
The city's history is visible in its compact centre, where the 18th-century Lankaran Lighthouse, the Zindan fortress tower and the Palace of the Talysh Khans recall its past as a fortified Caspian port. The Boyuk Bazar and Kichik Bazar mosques add to the older architectural fabric, while the local history museum and busy bazaar show everyday culture still rooted in trade and craft.
Around the city, Hirkan National Park protects ancient ironwood forests and rare wildlife, while the Gizil Aghaj reserve is a major stop for migratory birds. Visitors also come for the therapeutic black-sand beaches, mineral springs and tea and citrus plantation tours, with villages such as Sim in the Talysh Mountains offering hiking and rural experiences.
Lankaran's food scene centres on regional specialities such as lavangi, chicken or fish stuffed with walnuts, onion and sour paste and baked in a clay oven, alongside plov, gutab and freshly baked tendir bread. Tea served in local teahouses, together with the area's citrus fruits and honey, rounds out a cuisine that is among Azerbaijan's most distinctive.
Lankaran is a growing regional hub for agriculture, tea processing and agro-industry, with its international airport and position near the Iranian border supporting both trade and travel. The combination of nature, wellness, heritage and food makes it appealing for leisure visitors as well as for business travellers and those exploring Azerbaijan's south.
