About Tavush
Ijevan is the administrative centre of Armenia's Tavush Province, a small mountain town on the Aghstev River in the forested northeast, roughly 137 km from Yerevan. Known informally as the 'city of a hundred sculptures', it combines a relaxed provincial character with long-standing craft and winemaking traditions.
The town's name comes from the Armenian word for caravanserai, recalling its historic role as a stop on trade routes through the Caucasus. Landmarks such as the Surp Nerses Cathedral, the town's many public sculptures and its riverside parks reflect both Soviet-era development and older roots as Karvansara.
Around the centre, the Ijevan Dendropark is one of the region's best-known green spaces, while nearby monasteries including Haghartsin and Goshavank draw visitors into the forested hills of Tavush. The Yenokavan canyon and Lastiver cave settlement offer hiking and nature experiences a short drive away.
Ijevan is the economic and administrative hub of Tavush, with brandy and wine production, woodworking and a developing tourism and hospitality sector. Its position on the Yerevan–Tbilisi highway makes it a practical base for travellers moving between Armenia and Georgia.
For both leisure and business travellers, Ijevan offers a quieter alternative to Yerevan with access to monasteries, mountain nature, local brandy and the wider Tavush region.
