About Shirak
Gyumri is Armenia's second-largest city and the capital of Shirak Province, set in the country's northwest near the Turkish border. Known for its dark tuff-stone buildings, artisan workshops and resilient character, it offers a slower and more traditional contrast to Yerevan.
The city traces its roots to the ancient settlement of Kumayri and later became Alexandropol under Russian rule before being known as Leninakan in the Soviet era. The 1988 Spitak earthquake devastated much of Gyumri, and its rebuilt centre still mixes restored 19th-century architecture with visible reminders of that period.
At the heart of the city, Vartanants Square and the surrounding Kumayri Historic District contain rows of 19th-century stone houses, museums, churches and craft studios. Key sights include the Black Fortress, the Mother Armenia monument, Holy Saviour's Church and the busy Gyumri market.
Gyumri has a strong artistic identity, with galleries, music, theatre and handicrafts shaping daily life. Neighbourhood restaurants, cafés and bakeries serve Armenian dishes, while the city's food market is a good place to meet local producers and sample regional flavours.
For travellers, Gyumri works well as both a cultural stop and a practical base for northern Armenia. Shirak International Airport connects the city to regional and international routes, and the surrounding Shirak Province offers monasteries, highland landscapes and easy access to Yerevan for business or onward travel.
