About Bié
Cuíto, also spelled Kuito, is the capital of Bié Province and one of the main urban centers of central Angola. Set on the Bié Plateau, the city has a highland setting, a cool-to-mild climate and a strong role as a regional trade and transport hub. It was long known as Silva Porto, a name that still appears in local history and public monuments.
The city's history reaches back to the 18th century, when the Portuguese established a settlement that later took the name of explorer António da Silva Porto. Cuíto was heavily affected by the Angolan Civil War, particularly during the sieges of the 1990s, and much of the center has been rebuilt. Memorials and bullet-marked monuments such as the Silva Porto statue keep that recent history visible.
Visitors can explore the Mercado Municipal, historic churches, the Parque da Independência and landmarks linked to the Benguela Railway, which passes through the city on its route across central Angola. The surrounding countryside offers rolling hills, farmland and routes to sites such as the source of the Kwanza River.
As a provincial capital, Cuíto is relevant for business travel, logistics and trade, while its central location makes it a useful stop between Huambo, Luanda and eastern Angola. Its modest hotel scene, local markets and authentic highland character suit travelers interested in a less commercial side of Angola.
