About Cuando Cubango
Menongue is the capital of Cubango Province in southeastern Angola, set along the Cuebe River at about 1,350 metres above sea level. Once called Serpa Pinto, the town grew as a stop on the Moçâmedes Railway and today serves as the administrative and commercial heart of a vast, sparsely settled region.
The town's history is closely tied to the colonial railway that connected the Atlantic port of Namibe with the interior. After independence, Menongue remained a provincial centre, and in late 2024 the former Cuando Cubango Province was divided, making Menongue the capital of the new Cubango Province.
Menongue is predominantly associated with the Mbunda people, with Portuguese as the official language and several local languages spoken around the province. Life centres on the river, the railway station, lively markets and small churches, while the surrounding landscape of miombo woodland and the Cubango river system shapes the character of the area.
As a transport and trade gateway, Menongue links the central highlands with Angola's far southeast through road and rail connections. Its airport, markets and provincial services make it a practical stopover for business travellers, government workers and overland visitors heading toward the Okavango and Cuando river basins.
For travellers, Menongue offers a low-key introduction to southeastern Angola rather than a conventional tourist circuit. Its value lies in its role as a base for regional journeys, its riverfront setting, and its glimpse of everyday life in one of Angola's least crowded provinces.

Cuando Cubango Travel Guide
