About Kukës
Kukës is a small city in northeastern Albania, set near the Kosovo border at the foot of Mount Gjallica and on the shores of the artificial Lake Fierza. Its modern centre climbs terraced slopes above the Drin Valley, and mountain and lake views shape much of the city's character.
The town became widely known in 1999, when it sheltered hundreds of thousands of Kosovar Albanian refugees during the Kosovo War, an act of hospitality that led to Kukës becoming the first city nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000. The earlier town was submerged in the 1970s when the Fierza hydroelectric dam created the reservoir now called Lake Fierza.
Visitors are drawn by the lakeside setting and landmarks such as the Ethnographic Museum, the 1999 refugee memorial and the bridges over the Drin River. Lake Fierza, with its deep water and forested shores, is the main attraction for walks, boat trips and viewpoints, while Mount Gjallica rises to 2,489 metres above the town.
The surrounding region opens toward the Albanian Alps, Valbona Valley National Park and the Koman Lake ferry route, making Kukës a practical gateway to northern Albania's mountain scenery. Local guesthouses serve traditional northern Albanian dishes, dairy products and lake fish.
For travellers, Kukës combines a compact, walkable centre with easy access to the Kosovo border and Kukës International Airport. It suits independent leisure visitors heading into the mountains as well as business and transit travellers moving between Albania and Kosovo.
