About Paktika
Sharana, also written Sharan, is the capital of Paktika Province in southeastern Afghanistan and the province's main administrative and trading centre. Set at an altitude of about 2,200 metres in the Sulaimankhel Pashtun heartland, it is a compact city where government offices, bazaars, mosques and small businesses sit beside the roads that connect Paktika with Ghazni, Khost and the capital, Kabul.
The city grew from a modest district centre into a provincial capital, and its development accelerated after administrative offices and concrete markets were built around the central Sharana bazaar in the late 2000s. Today the city has bazaars, business centres, public parks, banks, hotels, restaurants, hospitals, schools and a university, giving it a functional role that extends well beyond its small urban core.
Sharana's identity is closely tied to the Pashtun tribal society of Paktika, a province that stretches along Afghanistan's border with Pakistan. Local life revolves around the bazaar, weekly trade, mosques and family networks, while the surrounding districts such as Urgun and Barmal are known for their rugged highland landscapes, traditional villages and agricultural valleys. The historic Sharan Fort in the nearby Zarah Sharan area adds a layer of local heritage.
As the seat of provincial government, Sharana is the practical base for administration, trade, education and regional transport. Its markets handle everyday goods, livestock and agricultural produce from outlying districts, and the city supports a small but growing set of services used by residents, officials and organisations working across the province.
For business travellers, Sharana offers access to provincial institutions and field operations in Paktika. For independent visitors it is an off-the-beaten-path introduction to Pashtun highland life, though travel here requires planning, local knowledge and awareness of the security situation. Kabul International Airport, roughly 200 kilometres away, is the usual international gateway, with Sharana Airstrip serving the city itself.

Paktika Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
Spring and early autumn offer the most comfortable weather for visiting Sharana and Paktika, with mild days and less extreme conditions. Winters are cold at the city's high altitude, while summer can be hot in lower-lying districts, and heavy rain or snow can make rural roads harder to travel.
How to Get Around
Sharana's compact centre is easy to explore on foot around the main bazaar. For journeys to district centres and surrounding villages, shared taxis and hired four-wheel-drive vehicles are the standard options, and the highway toward Ghazni and Kabul is the main access route.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Sharana is limited and mostly consists of small guesthouses and basic hotels near the bazaar and administrative areas. Travellers on longer visits often use Kabul as a base and make planned trips into Paktika, checking local conditions before booking.
Food & Drink
Local food is simple Afghan and Pashtun fare, including naan, kabuli pulao, grilled kebabs and green tea. Small restaurants and tea houses around the bazaar serve daily meals, while provincial markets supply fresh produce and staples.
