About Réunion
Réunion is a French overseas island in the Indian Ocean where dramatic volcanic relief, green highlands and a warm Creole culture meet. Visitors are drawn to its mountain trails, active volcano, coastal towns and a mix of French, African, Indian and Chinese influences.
Saint-Denis, the capital on the north coast, combines colonial architecture with markets and lively streets, while Saint-Pierre and Saint-Gilles on the west coast are known for beaches, the lagoon and a relaxed seaside atmosphere. Smaller towns such as Cilaos, Hell-Bourg and Salazie open onto the island's high interior.
The island's landscapes are dominated by Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world's most active volcanoes, and Piton des Neiges, whose erosion created the three great cirques of Cilaos, Mafate and Salazie. Waterfalls, forests, sugarcane fields and the protected western lagoon add further variety.
As a French overseas department and outermost region of the EU, Réunion uses the euro and combines French infrastructure with Indian Ocean character. Business travel, conferences and tourism connect mainly through Roland Garros Airport near Saint-Denis and the secondary Pierrefonds Airport near Saint-Pierre.
A network of coastal highways, mountain roads and the Route du Littoral links the island's towns, while buses, taxis, rental cars, private transfers and chauffeur services make it practical to move between airports, hotels, business districts, event venues and natural attractions.
