About Whatì Airport
Whatì Airport is a small regional airport serving Whatì, a Tłı̨chǫ community on the western shore of Lac La Martre in the Northwest Territories. Located about 1.9 km (1 nautical mile) east of the community, it provides an important air link for residents, supplies and visitors travelling across Canada's northern interior.
The airport is operated by the Government of the Northwest Territories and has a single gravel runway aligned 10/28, suited to turboprop and light twin-engine aircraft. Scheduled regional flights connect Whatì with Yellowknife, roughly 164 km to the southeast.
For much of the year Whatì was traditionally reached by air, but the opening of the Tłı̨chǫ Highway (Highway 9) in 2021 now provides year-round road access to Highway 3. The short road from the airstrip to the community centre takes only a few minutes.
The compact terminal offers basic passenger facilities, with no customs services on site. For most travellers, Whatì Airport remains a practical gateway for reaching the community and continuing onward by road or air across the Tłı̨chǫ region.
