Wellington International Airport is the main international airport serving New Zealand's capital and the lower North Island. It connects Wellington with domestic centres across the country as well as international destinations, supporting both leisure and business travel.
The airport officially opened in 1959 on the Rongotai isthmus, and the current integrated terminal was completed in 1999. A main terminal extension finished in 2016 added space, seating, and food and shopping choices, consolidating domestic and international operations in a single building.
Located about 8 km southeast of downtown Wellington in the suburb of Rongotai, the airport is reached by public bus, taxis, shuttles, private transfers and rental cars. Road links make onward travel to central Wellington, the Hutt Valley and the wider region straightforward.
